Cheesy Mac And Cheese

A tasty, cheesy mac and cheese that will leave you coming back for seconds! A family favorite recipe for many years to come.

When the temperature starts to fall I always crave comfort food. Cheesy mac and cheese is definitely a huge weakness of mine and a HUGE family favourite. Noodles {carbs} covered in cheese? Yes, please! #carbload



Marble, Monterey Jack, Medium Cheddar, etc. They are all great choices.

My favourite cheese to use in this recipe is marble cheese. Marble is light tasting and creamy. You can use other cheeses like Monterey Jack or any cheddar cheese. If you want to add a little sharpness to your cheesy mac and cheese try adding some medium cheddar cheese. The bolder the cheese the bolder the taste.

I have made this recipe with both medium cheddar cheese and marble. My husband prefers marble cheese, as he isn’t a fan of sharp-tasting cheese. I, on the other hand, enjoy this recipe made with medium cheese in place of marble. Both taste great! If you are making this for the family I highly recommend using marble cheese.


Make this dish ahead of time for meal prep.

You can prepare this dish in advance to pop in the oven on a busy day. If you make it ahead of time refrigerate for up to two days. I have done this from time to time, to save time on a busy day, but still serve a nice hot meal.

Tip: make sure the casserole is completely cool before refrigerating. Also, take note that it will take longer to heat through if baking right out of the fridge. I recommend allowing the dish to warm to room temp before baking.


If you are looking to add additional flavour, toss in some herbs and spices.

You can add herbs and spices like garlic powder, dried chives or parsley, everyday seasoning, or seasonings of your choice. If you want to spice the dish up a bit, add some red pepper flakes or even cayenne pepper.

I have tried spicing this recipe up with some parsley in the past to give the dish more colour and flavour. It tasted great, but honestly, this recipe made plain, as is, is absolutely perfect.

If you want to create a more “balanced” meal, you could add some broccoli florets and cooked chicken breast chunks!


The secret to this family favourite is black pepper {more than just a taste 😉}, onion and the extra cheese {yessss, cheese… give me all the cheese}.

Cook Time 45 minutes
Additional Time 15 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 15 minutes


  • 1 package 454g cut macaroni
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 1 Black pepper
  • 1 Spray of olive oil
  • 2 tbsp Butter, salted heaping
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 8 cups Of a mix of marble and medium flavoured cheese


  1. Prepare noodles, by boiling them in a pot of water. Cook according to directions on the packaging.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  3. Chop your onion and grate your cheeses
  4. Once noodles are cooked, strain off the water.
  5. Prepare a large rectangular baking dish by spraying it with oil.
  6. Add a thin layer of cooked noodles, followed by a thin layer of the onion, followed by a thick layer of cheese, garnish with black pepper, and repeat this steo2-4 more times.
  7. Top the final layer with chunks of butter, drizzle with milk, and more black pepper, and cover with tin foil.
  8. Bake for 45 mins, covered. Remove the tin foil, and bake for additional 5-8 minutes.
  9. Let rest for 15 minutes before serving.
